Sparsholt College is widely acknowledged as the home of traditional keeper training and our wildlife and countryside managers are also building a great reputation for their knowledge and expertise of habitat and rural resources management. In doing so, they all make use of:

  • a proud heritage, providing gamekeeping and wildlife education for forty years

  • unique Game and Wildlife Centre including game larder, cold store, carcass handling and butchery, bird incubation, hatching and indoor rearing facilities

  • the College Home Farm, with its incorporated wildlife zones under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, and other developing habitat areas

  • the Wildlife Observation Unit with constructed walkway and ancient woodland area

  • the fishing lake, attractive to wildlife and wetland species

  • the deer park with its herd of Sika deer

  • deer management and stalking experience at a large local estate

  • the game rearing unit for pheasant and partridge

  • the 25m indoor rifle range, the field clay shoot and secure gun armoury

  • college-run local shoot and experience on other local shoot days

  • an OfSTED ‘Outstanding’ grade and Centre of Vocational Excellence award

In recent Government inspections of courses at both further and higher education levels, the Section was awarded top marks for the quality of its courses, the teaching and learning opportunities and resources available. The Section is also a long standing Centre of Vocational Excellence.

The programmes offered by the Section go from introductory courses for school leavers through to honours degree level.

They cross all areas of game, wildlife or conservation management. So whatever your experience, current qualifications and career aspirations are, we have the course to suit your requirements.

The courses have been carefully designed to allow a progression through the levels and also across the subject specialisms.

There are twelve full-time academic staff within the Section, all of whom have both practical experience and qualifications relevant to their particular specialism. The staff are actively involved on a professional basis in the study and management of game, wildlife and the countryside.

The College has also established close links with a range of landowners throughout the country and has unprecedented access to a wide variety of sites, so that students can experience a diversity of wildlife and its management at first-hand. Site visits and talks given by visiting speakers with extra expertise are integrated into our courses.
