Advanced National Certificate in Animal Management (City & Guilds)

This Level 3 course is designed to provide practical and theoretical knowledge for those wishing to enter supervisory employment within the animal care industry, or wishing to progress onto higher education.

It is also highly suitable for those currently employed in an animal related industry or seeking career progression. It will relate to careers with domestic animals, wildlife, exotic, zoo and farm animals.

The course is a vocationally-related award and is designed for mature students who wish to retrain in the animal care industry. Candidates are expected to have a good educational background and hold some relevant experience.

The course is modular-based and is conducted over three days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) during one academic year, in which industry experience is gained on a work placement.

Course programme

The course comprises both core and extra units to allow for individual requirements. An externally-set exam takes place, covering the five core units...

  • Animal science
  • Animal handling and safe working
  • Advanced animal health care
  • Animal housing and feeding, and
  • Industrial experience in the land-based sector.

An additional five units will complete the award. Extra units in practical training and key skills will enhance your CV and personal employability. These include:

  • Husbandry of exotic pets
  • Husbandry of zoological animals
  • Animals in society, and
  • Wildlife and rehabilitation
  • Kennel and cattery

Successful candidates on this Advanced National Certificate course will possess the skills and theoretical knowledge to enter the animal care industry at supervisory or managerial level (dependent on ability and experience). It is also designed for those wishing to become self-employed or run a small business.

Entry requirements

This course is for students with suitable GCSEs or who may have achieved merit or above on Animal Management Level 2 course and/or are currently employed in an animal-related industry. Mature students will be considered on experience.
