I first visited Sparsholt on an open day and really liked what I saw, from the yard itself to the various demonstrations going on. I’m not a big fan of exams, so having practical assessments and coursework suited me well. I also liked the small class sizes as the teachers have more time for you. The course was really interesting and I’m now doing the BSc top-up.

Even with a subject that sounds quite technical, the teacher finds an angle to get you interested and I’ve ........

Course / Qualification - BSc Garden Design profile-image

After three years of challenging, yet enjoyable work, it was a fantastic sense of achievement when I was awarded my BSc (Hons) in Garden Design.

Since then I’ve relocated to Gibraltar where I’m developing a design business of my own and working alongside the horticultural team at the Alameda Botanic Gardens. In this diverse environment I’m continuing to learn the practical skills and techniques for organic and sustainable design, and to help protect an ecological syst........

I decided to go into engineering because of my very keen interest in cars...some might call it an obsession and enrolled on the Automotive Vehicle course Level 2 (now Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) Level 2: Certificate in Vehicle Service & Repair).

I knew it would be tough but on the day of the interview and tour of the College, I immediately felt at ease and knew I'd enjoy studying the couse and becoming a student. Since then, I have learned more than I imagined.

I was v........

When I started researching garden design courses Sparsholt was recommended to me by several people in the industry who had either studied there themselves or knew people who had. I remember feeling daunted by returning to education but it became familiar very quickly. I was inspired by the tutors and their enthusiasm and various areas of expertise. The range of subjects taught at Sparsholt proved to be a real advantage, as we were able to mix with students and tutors from different discipline........

I still remember my ‘moment of clarity’ well...

I was in a traffic jam on my way to work. As a lifelong angler, and general ‘outdoors’ person, I wondered how I had managed to end up working in a large office dealing with accounts and insurance. Then aged 26, my mind wandered back to when I had visited Sparsholt College for an open day after leaving school at 16. Where would I have been now if I had chosen a different career path? My resignation letter almost beg........

I chose Sparsholt because it offered everything I wanted to achieve from a college and course. I have always been passionate about fish and their eco-systems and environment and when I came to visit, I fell in love with the place.

From living away from home I feel I have gained the social skills to talk to anyone from any situation or background and have made friends for life through our shared passions. I am also now confident relating to other people in the fisheries industry and fee........

Course / Qualification - FdSc in Lowland Woodland Management profile-image

In 2008, I left full time employment to embark on a challenging, but exciting journey; to study a Foundation Degree in Lowland Woodland Management at Sparsholt.

With a really good reputation, and close enough to my home to make the commute a viable one, Sparsholt was an obvious choice for me. The College has great facilities, lending great scope to the potential for exploring the practical elements of the course. The learning resources too are fantastic, the library in my opinion parti........

Course / Qualification - FdSc Veterinary Nursing Science graduate
and Registered Veterinary Nurse, PDSA Southampton

I’d studied for the Diploma in Animal Management at Sparsholt so knew all about the facilities and decided to progress on to the Foundation degree in Veterinary Nursing Science.

The range of animals at the Animal Management Centre is great and I also liked the course structure of alternating time at college and on work placements, so practical skills can develop alongside theoretical knowledge. I regularly use a lot of the skills I learnt at Sparsholt and on my placements now.

Course / Qualification - BSc Conservation and Wildlife graduate and founder of Eco-OWL profile-image

Back in 2007 I was working as a telecommunications consultant but wanted to change direction and study something really different. I joined Sparsholt on the Diploma in Game and Wildlife which was a great course and equipped me very well. After finishing, I worked as a deerstalker in Scotland over summer and returned to Sparsholt in September to start the degree course in Conservation!

I feel doing both courses made me a more rounded individual, with both practical and academic skills. ........

When I starting looking at universities I found Sparsholt had the best veterinary nursing facilities compared to the others I visited. The Animal Management Centre had a wide variety of species for practicals and there were also amazing library resources and a dedicated Veterinary Nursing Centre.  I also like the fact there is lots of green outdoor space on and around campus.

I met some great new friends for life here and enjoyed the mix of study time and practical experience thro........

I’ve always been interested in animals and knew they were what I wanted to study. I saw a Sparsholt prospectus at school, found a course I liked the look of and then visited on Countryside Day, Course Open Day and also the Taster Day. I first thought the College was huge and daunting but as soon as you started, everyone was really helpful. It was an exciting place and very different than school.

It’s a very hands-on experience, not just sitting in a classroom, you are out w........

Course / Qualification - Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Arboriculture and Tree Care profile-image

Whilst working as a climber for a local tree surgeon I decided to start studying a National Diploma in Arboriculture at Sparsholt.

During the course I was made aware of the Foundation Degree in Arboriculture and whilst I contemplated starting the course thoughts were running through my mind like, will I be able to cope with the work load and is this what I actually want to do?

My worrying was needless as the lecturers help you with any problems and answer any questions........

I got talking to a Sparsholt College representative at a local show and expressed an interest in the Foundation Degree.  I was contacted with further information and before I knew it, I was enrolling on the part-time course!

I’d been running my own business for over 20 years, but had never used a computer before so it was a steep learning curve. I really enjoyed the mixture of ages on the course though and we bonded well – I missed them all when I left! The lecturers w........

Currently working in a veterinary practice, I decided to undertake the FdSc in Animal Management and Applied Science (with behaviour options) to expand my small animal knowledge but also to learn more about exotic, avian and farm animal medicine and husbandry. The behavioural aspects of the course have been particularly useful in my current employment and being a practical person, I enjoy the hands on experience you get both in the laboratory and down at the animal management centre.

I was originally looking to study veterinary medicine but didn’t get the grades I needed. I knew I still wanted to pursue a career with animals and the BSc Animal Management course was the perfect answer, providing me with skills in all aspects of the industry including animal husbandry, conservation, welfare, behaviour and medicine.
