George Stone – FdSc Horticulture with Plantsmanship and Design
It was not a difficult decision choosing to continue at Sparsholt after two fantastic years studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma. I have been able to work with enthusiastic, passionate, knowledgeable lecturers using fantastic resources and have made some great memories! Major highlights from my previous course include working at Sandham Memorial Chapel, achieving Gold Medal and Best in Category at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2015, work experience at Marwell Wildlife and many more.
The FdSc course covers a diverse range of subjects allowing me to broaden my knowledge and skills in the industry, as well as providing networking opportunities. So far this year I have enjoyed working in the labs on experiments such as testing soils and backing up my practical skills with knowledge and science. Plant classification and nomenclature with its practical idents has also helped my knowledge in this area.
We are able to carry out two sets of work experience. For one set I have been given the opportunity to work at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on a show garden and for the other I would like to work with a plant breeder to gain a better understanding of this area for my individual project.
After the course I am looking to stay on for a further Top-up year to secure my BSc (Hons) in Horticulture with Plantsmanship and Design. Beyond this, I am looking to pursue a career in Plant Breeding.
As a progressing student I can honestly say I have been challenged throughout both courses. I have made some fantastic friends with which I have shared amazing memories and I would highly recommend both courses to people thinking about getting started in Horticulture.
