Student benefits:

Industry work placements provide students with opportunities to develop technical and employability skills with a local employer.

Why placements work:

  • You can apply the knowledge you learn at college to the workplace
  • You increase your confidence as you develop your skills
  • You develop your communication, team work and problem-solving skills
  • You see how a business operates in the real world
  • You can identify key technical strengths and skills you will need at work
  • You have a chance to test your career choices
  • You can line up a reference for future use

The placement process:

  • Who can go on an industry work placement?

Full-time 16 – 18 year old students on Technical or Vocational qualifications at Level 2 or 3, where the course tutor identifies that a placement can fit alongside course obligations.

  • When can a student go on an industry work placement?

Placements can be delivered on a day-release basis, where you can be with employers for 1 or 2 days a week alongside your classroom learning or on an agreed block release to fit with your study requirements.

  • What is the typical duration of an industry work placement?

The typical duration of an industry work placement is a minimum of 315 hours per placement over a number of days ranging from 45-60. The typical hours of a work placement would be 8 hours including a 1 hour lunch.

  • What you need to do:

Get in touch with the Industry Work Placement Team to log your interest and tell us about yourself (we’ll give you a template to use). Have an initial meeting with the Industry Work Placement Team so we can start to work on identifying the right employer for you and to prepare you for your placement.

  • What we will do:

We’ll guide you through the whole process, from start to finish, finding you the best employer and work placement to match your college course. We’ll provide support to ensure you are work ready and support you with any form-filling – both prior to and while on placement. We’ll also ensure your work place is safe and welcoming and during the placement we’ll visit you, to make sure you’re developing new skills and are progressing well in your chosen setting.
