Current BSc (Hons) Sports Fisheries and Aquaculture student
I first heard about Sparsholt College at an angling show. Later when I was looking to retrain I chose Sparsholt as it is renowned for fisheries courses and I’d read a lot about it in the angling press. I visited on an Open Day and was impressed by the range of facilities. I chose to live in the halls at the University of Winchester because the social life is good and you get to meet lots of different people.
I started on the FdSc course and progressed onto the BSc Top-up. The best things about my course are the content of the units, the level of teaching and the practical work. We’ve done seine netting and electrofishing off-site as well as fish-rearing on-site. Last year we spawned catfish eggs in the NATC – I don’t think there’s anywhere else you’d get to do this.
I’m now writing up my dissertation on the effect of pharmaceuticals on the development of zebrafish embryos. I used the NATC for my research. The trial went really well and the support of the lecturers was great, they helped give me a push in the right direction when I needed it and were very encouraging.
I’ll soon be starting a work placement with a salmon producer in Scotland. They’ve employed Sparsholt graduates before so I’m hoping it could potentially lead to a job for me too.
