BSc (Hons) Equine Studies graduate

I chose Sparsholt initially because of its good reputation – everyone I knew who had studied here enjoyed it. I remember coming to meet the tutors and thinking how friendly they all were. I chose to study the Diploma in Horse Management and had such a good experience I carried on to the degree course.

I found the College had a good atmosphere to learn in, informative but not pressurised. The tutors were easy to talk to, willing to help and nothing seemed too much trouble. I enjoyed the options in the third year of the degree which enabled me to tailor the topics to my own interests, such as genetics and reproductive technology and nutrition and dietetics.

My dissertation was an investigation into the physiological and cardiovascular demands on the polo pony, comparing summer and winter polo seasons.

I’ve had an interest in polo all my life and after graduating was approached to run a large polo yard in Perth, Australia for six months and play for the team there. It’s a 90-horse yard with a very prestigious reputation and I can’t wait! Ultimately though I want to go into Pharmacology and Veterinary Medicine so am planning to study for a Masters when I return.

Before I started my studies I didn’t plan to go into this field but the degree course enlightened and inspired me. The tutors also really supported me throughout my course and dissertation and a lot of my results reflect this help.
