Higher Education Study Support

 

The specialist HE study support team at Sparsholt College consists of Barbara Kelly and Caroline D’Urso. They both work part-time and can be found in discreet tutorial rooms in either the Library or the HE Study Centre on these days each week;

  • Tuesday 08.30-17.00
  • Wednesday 08.30-19.00
  • Thursday 08.30-19.00
  • Friday 08.30-16.30

Barbara and Caroline are specialist study skills tutors and HE disability advisors whose main role is to provide support for students in receipt of DSA funding based on specific learning disabilities (eg. dyslexia, dyspraxia, Asperger’s Syndrome), and other identified needs. The support provided can include study skills tailored to your needs, specialist ASD mentoring, exam access arrangements as well as advice and guidance on the DSA process and the assessment required to ensure that you receive the help you need. It can take up to two months to complete an assessment and gain approval for DSA support so it is important that you arrange this before starting on your degree. Students who do not receive regular support, but would like help with a specific issue, (such as assignment planning, referencing, proof reading etc.) are welcome to book a one-off session, if staff are available.

Library and Learning Resources

The library is a particularly pleasant place in which to study. Over one hundred reading places offer a comfortable research environment, with relaxing views over a landscaped park.

All students have access to the Library and Learning Resource Centre. The library houses a collection of regularly updated specialist resources to support coursework and research. Students have access to a wide range of electronic resources including ebooks, ejournals and online databases that are accessible both on and off campus which sit alongside more traditional resources such as books, journals, DVDs, reference, reports, a careers collection, exam papers and thesis. Wireless access is provided to complement the laptops and computers available for student use.

Experienced library staff are always pleased to offer support and guidance. Flexible arrangements are available to part-time students (e.g. extended borrowing periods as appropriate, telephone renewals, etc).

Our collaboration with the University of Portsmouth provides all Higher Education students with access to the libraries, research and study facilities available to their undergraduates. Those students resident in University of Winchester accommodation also have access to these facilities on the Winchester campus.

 

Student Services

There is no denying that higher education can be tough. Even the most organised of people can struggle as they endeavor to keep on top of workloads, meet deadlines and juggle college assignments with work and family commitments. Your tutors recognise this and will go out of their way to assist on course related issues if you let them know. In order to ensure that we can best address your needs, your tutor may also suggest that you pay a visit to student services who can provide professional help and guidance on the non-academic side of life here at Sparsholt.
