Joe Pearce – FdSc Sports Fisheries and Aquaculture graduate

Fish were always my passion and I chose Sparsholt because of its reputation and contacts within the industry. I heard about Sparsholt through fishing magazines and other angling press, and also went to an open day before starting.

The course was a good combination of practical and technical work. The main advantage of a course at Sparsholt is the work placement opportunities which allow you to develop practical skills. The support from the lecturers was also a great help.

I learned many different skills during the course. The most important would be the fish husbandry skills which I now use daily in the workplace. Data analysis has also been very useful, as well as being able to work in teams as well as solo.

The facilities at Sparsholt are excellent – they are very similar to ones used in the industry which is very helpful when starting a new job.

I am currently a farm operative for a large salmon farm in Scotland. I am based out on the sea cages and my duties involve the basic husbandry of salmon including feeding, water quality testing, removal of mortalities and wrasse husbandry.

Being a Sparsholt graduate helped me to achieve my ambitions as I felt prepared for a job in the industry. I developed a good range of skills and knowledge during the course.

Find out more about FdSc Sports Fisheries and Aquaculture

Joe Pearce – FdSc Sports Fisheries and Aquaculture graduate Fish were always my … Continued
