Access to Higher Education and Animal Management & Applied Science student

“When I started on the Access course it was with a view to becoming a veterinary nurse – but after work experience I realised that this was not for me and continued to pursue Animal Management instead. Thanks to the small class sizes and continued support and encouragement from the staff at Sparsholt, it was easy to apply for a degree after finishing my Access course. All the advice I needed was at my fingertips so the decision to do the Animal Management and Applied Science Foundation Degree was painless! I certainly found having prior knowledge of the campus and lecturers a benefit going into my degree – this was another big plus of doing the Access course at Sparsholt.

As a mature student I was not looking for a large campus with lots of people so, for me, Sparsholt was perfect in that respect. Class sizes are small which makes the learning experience more intimate and manageable. In September I will be starting my fourth and (potentially!) final year and I haven’t come across an unsupportive or unfriendly lecturer yet!

Sparsholt is a big name within the animal industry, mainly because of the super facilities and vastly experienced teaching staff. It provides valuable links to the industry, giving its students amazing opportunities to meet people and work in a variety of places, which helps you realise where your strengths and weaknesses lie and guides you to future prospects. My interests have done a complete 360 since studying at Sparsholt and I’ve gone from wanting to work hands-on with animals to working in labs and doing research, where I can hopefully help with the bigger picture of animal welfare and conservation.”
