FdSc Fishery Management and Aquaculture

Fish were always my passion and I chose Sparsholt because of its reputation and contacts within the industry.

The course was a great mix of practical and technical work. The work placements are also a fantastic way of gaining practical knowledge and skills. The support from the lecturers was a great help – they are all experts within the industry and nothing is too much trouble for them.

I learnt many different skills during the course which I now use daily in the workplace including fish husbandry, water quality analysis, data analysis and environmental monitoring. The facilities at Sparsholt are excellent – they are very similar to ones used in the industry which is very helpful when starting a new job.

After graduating I worked for an independent salmon farm on the west coast of Scotland. I am now a Trainee Site Manager for a breeding company that specialises in producing Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout eggs. I have also just started a distance learning Master’s degree.

Sparsholt prepared me for a job in the industry by giving me strong scientific and practical knowledge to build upon. Employers recognise how successful Sparsholt is and I feel being a Sparsholt graduate helps you to get a foot in the industry.
