Why is an apprenticeship right for my child?

As a parent you want your child to get the best possible start in their career. There are many options available to young people after they leave school. Apprenticeships are a great option for young people who want to get into the world of work. Unlike more conventional choices, like university, they will get skills, experience and qualifications on the job.

Apprenticeships can also offer the opportunity of a degree such as a BA or a BSc, and whatever the apprenticeship, they’ll be earning while they’re learning. So your child can start their career gaining the kind of skills and experience that employers are looking for.

The Government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training. This does not necessarily mean staying in school; young people have a choice about how they continue in education or training post-16, which could be through an apprenticeship with Andover College.

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England. There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job.

• Apprenticeship Levels

  
  There are various levels of apprenticeship your son and daughter can apply for depending on their current skills and qualifications. Apprenticeships have equivalent educational levels:

  Name	Level	Equivalent Educational Level
  Intermediate	2	5 GCSE Passes at grades A*-C
  Advanced	3	2 A Level passes
  Higher	4,5,6 and 7	Foundation degree and above
  Degree	6 and 7	Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree

   

  All apprenticeships will include elements of on the job and off the job training leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. All apprenticeships will require an assessment at the end of the programme to assess the apprentice’s ability and competence in their job role.

• Entry requirements for apprenticeships

  Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16. There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job. Apprentices need to be committed, motivated, enthusiastic and reliable, with a ‘can-do’ attitude.

• Benefits to your son or daughter in doing an apprenticeship

   

  • They will earn a real wage;
  • Be trained in the skills employers want;
  • Learn at a pace that suits your child and be supported by aa Apprenticeship Liaison Officer;
  • Be entitled to employee benefits of your employee’s organisations e.g. Holiday leave.
