Each subject area has its own requirements for clothing and personal protective equipment that must be worn. Please select your subject area below for information on the items you need to obtain.

  • Personal Protective Equipment
    It is mandatory under Health and Safety protocols that you always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working with the animals, machinery, and equipment to protect both you and them!
    Failure to comply with the rules on PPE will mean that you will not be able to participate in your practical session, which will seriously affect your experience during your course and grades.
    – Only stud earrings or small hoops (1cm diameter) are permitted and worn at the risk of the student.
    – Long hair must be tied back.
    – A wristwatch (can be worn).
    – Long False/Acrylic nails are not permitted.
    Bib and brace style overalls are not to be worn during your practical sessions. College branded overalls must be worn during all practical’s sessions to ensure all leaners are following health and safety protocols and college policy.

    College branded clothing and PPE is now a mandatory requirement for all students enrolling onto all courses within Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering.
    You will need:

    • Grey Sparsholt branded (Student) hoodie/sweatshirt/ fleece.
    • Grey Sparsholt branded (Student) coat or a plain waterproof jacket.

    Important information:

    • Cold Weather: If working outside or in an unheated area, please check the weather forecast before you come to college and ensure that you bring sufficient layers to remain comfortable, these layers must be worn underneath your overalls. Your designated PPE must always be your top layer of clothing when working on the farm or in the workshops.
    • Hot Weather: As the temperatures rise during the summer months, it’s important for college students to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated. College branded polos will be a minimum requirement even during hot days. In the instance of extreme heat, the college will carry out a health and safety assessment and sessions will be amended to suit conditions.
    • Care of uniform: All uniform must be taken home and washed.
    • For Agriculture students – Due to the high number of animals at our Sparsholt campus, we follow strict biosecurity measures, this is to avoid the risk of transmitting infections and diseases. It is essential that you do NOT wear any PPE or boots that may have been contaminated; for this reason, students are NOT permitted to wear any soiled/muddy or contaminated clothes from home farms / work placements or farms outside the college.
    • PPE should be removed before leaving the farm or workshops and NEVER worn inside catering outlets on in any teaching classrooms.Electronics and valuables: Students have a responsibility to keep their valuable items safe while on site. This includes laptops, phones, and other personal belongings that are required for the course. Ultimately, it is up to the student to take proactive measures to protect their belongings and minimize the risk of loss or damage while on site.

This includes laptops, phones, and other personal belongings that are required for the course. Ultimately, it is up to the student to take proactive measures to protect their belongings and minimize the risk of loss or damage while on site.

Only stud earrings and small hoops (1cm diameter ) are permitted and worn at the risk of the student, long hair must be tied back. Wedding or engagement rings can remain on if difficult to remove, and a watch (can be worn. Students are expected to change into the required clothing on the unit, and remove them before leaving the unit.

    Please ensure that your PPE is regularly washed at high temperatures. It is essential that you do NOT wear any outer clothing that may have been contaminated; for this reason, students are NOT allowed to bring coats into the AHWRC. Waterproof coats are essential for you to buy to equip you for outdoor working.

    • Black cargo-type work trousers
    • Black cargo-type shorts
    • Steel toe-capped safety boots
    • A pair of wellington boots
    • Sparsholt branded/plain green/black cotton overalls- These are useful if you want to wear clothes underneath for extra layering.

    Optional:

    • Sparsholt branded hoodie
    • Sparsholt branded sweatshirt
    • Sparsholt branded or plain green/black beanie hat
    • Black or green water-proof trousers
    • Black or green scarf
    • Black or green gloves

    • Cold Weather: If working outside or in an unheated area, please check the weather forecast before you come to college and ensure that you bring sufficient layers to remain comfortable, these layers must be worn underneath your overalls.     • Very Hot Weather: If working outside in hot weather conditions, then overalls may be rolled down around the waist IF a Sparsholt branded polo-shirt is worn underneath
    • Care of uniform: All uniform must be taken home and washed. There is a risk of disease transmission between species if this is not done weekly. If you turn up in dirty, uniform will not be permitted and you may be told that you cannot participate in that practical session.
    • NB Footwear worn at the AHWRC must not be worn when in contact with other animals including visiting the equine centre or any of the other livestock units at the college. This is to prevent disease transmission.
    • PPE should be removed before leaving the AHWRC and NEVER worn inside catering outlets.

  • Uniform for all students

    This clothing must be worn whilst at the Equine Centre at all times:

    • Navy blue Equine polo shirt (short/long sleeved)
    • Navy blue Equine sweatshirt
    • Navy blue Equine jacket/dark coloured waterproof jacket

    Please note: all Equine navy blue sweatshirts, polo shirts and jackets are available for purchase online from Creative Images

    Strictly no jewellery/any piercings (including stud earrings) are allowed at anytime whilst at the Equine Centre. 

    Course Equipment for all courses/pathways

    At the start of your course you will need the following essential items:

    Equipment List for all pathways (Ride & Non-Ride)

    • Riding hats to current approved standard (PAS015)
    • Plain coloured riding gloves
    • 1 x jumping whip – plain dark colour
    • Appropriate dark coloured footwear for the yard. (NB trainers are not allowed at the Equine Centre)
    • Appropriate dark coloured trousers for the yard. (NB blue denim jeans are not allowed at the Equine Centre)

    Additional Equipment List for the ride pathway only

    • Dark coloured plain jodhpurs or breeches (minimum 2 pairs)
    • Long leather riding boots (black or brown) or jodhpur boots and leather gaiters/suede half chaps for riding (please note Dubarry/country boots or similar are not permitted for riding)
    • Hairnets or plaited hair when riding
    • 1 x schooling whip – plain dark colour
    • Body Protector up to the current BS1 Standard (this is recommended however not compulsory for the L1, L2 or the first year of the L3 course).

    • Neoprene gloves
    • Steel toe-capped work boots (compulsory)
    • Wellington boots
    • A pen, pencil, folder and paper etc.

    Level 2 Diploma students will need heavy duty work gloves.

    Houseplant Jungle Uniform 

    At the start of your course students who are working for Houseplant Jungle are required to purchase one (fully embroidered) short sleeved polo shirt which should be worn on work days and representing the College at events and activities. Other Houseplant Jungle clothing items are optional.

    Foundation Sports Uniform

    All Foundation Sports students are required to purchase one (fully embroidered) training top which should be worn when representing the College at events and activities, and on training days if they wish.  Students may wish to purchase additional items from the Foundation Sport shop but this is optional.

    • Trousers: Navy blue work trousers
    • Polo Shirt and Fleece Jacket: Navy blue, embroidered with Sparsholt, Horticulture
    • Gloves: Good quality cowhide gloves (which tend to outlive standard cheaper cloth and cowhide gloves that can deteriorate quickly)
    • Safety Boots: Black with steel toecaps; no trainers. Wellingtons may be useful but must have steel toecaps
    • Stationery: Lever arch file, paper, pens, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, 50 x see-through plastic wallets for A4 paper for assignment submission etc.
    • Locker: A padlock is required. A usage charge of £10 a year is applied annually
    • Drawing equipment – Level 3 only: A deposit of £25 is required for a drawing kit for design projects

    Payment should be made to Student Services after arrival; the deposits are returnable if conditions are met.

    Sports Uniform – Fitness 

    At the start of your course you will need to ensure that you have appropriate sport clothing and footwear for fitness training sessions. Sports (Fitness) students are required to purchase one (fully embroidered) short sleeved Fitness Academy jersey top which should be worn at fitness training sessions and when representing the College at events and activities. Other Fitness Academy clothing is optional.

    All Players require Sparsholt College Football Academy Training Kit for training and travel to matches. For all sessions players will also require trainers, boots and shin pads. 

    Sparsholt College Football Academy players can purchase (fully embroidered) Football Academy training kit. It is recommended that all players purchase the following as a minimum:

    • 1 Training Shirt
    • 1 Training Shorts
    • 1 Training Socks
    • 1 Training Pant
    • 1 Training Sweatshirt
