What will I learn?

Overview

Your tutor Richard will introduce you to a range of time-honoured drawing methods designed to inspire confidence when approaching all forms of artwork, particularly the face and figure in this case.

What Will I Study?

Richard will introduce you, one step at a time, to the fundamentals of drawing the face and the figure through direct observation, and various techniques used by countless portrait artists, both contemporary and historic. You will learn how to measure and rescale from life through direct observation, with the use of line and mark making. You will be shown the value of shading and highlights to render the illusion of form on a 2D surface. You will be shown how to create backgrounds and to build up layers of paint in useful, imaginative and expressive ways.
There will be instruction on how to explore composition, how to use lighting effects and how to suggest focal points in your work.

You will be supported and encouraged to trust your own judgement and nurture your own unique style.

Where will it lead me?

Richard is always happy to discuss further art study if you are curious.
