Students and staff across Sparsholt and Andover College campuses have come together to honour loved ones, celebrate cherished memories and raise vital funds for bereavement support charity Simon Says through a special fundraising event, Miles of Memories.
The event formed part of Sparsholt College Group’s (SCG) journey towards becoming a Champion College for Simon Says, a charity that supports children and young people up to the age of 18 in Hampshire who are experiencing bereavement.
Many learners have experienced the loss of a significant person in their lives, either before joining the college or during their studies. Through its partnership with Simon Says, SCG is committed to strengthening the support available to students’ navigating grief, helping them to continue achieving their goals and looking positively towards the future.
Held on Tuesday 9 June, Miles of Memories invited students and staff to cycle a symbolic mile on a stationary bike in memory of someone they had lost. Participants made a donation to take part and were encouraged to write the name of their loved one on a star, which they wore during their mile.
Once their cycle was completed, participants added their stars to a collective “Sky Full of Stars” display. The display became a moving visual tribute, celebrating the lives of those who are no longer with us while highlighting the strength and compassion of the college community. Those unable to take part in the cycling challenge were still able to contribute by making a donation and adding a star to the display.
The event took place throughout the day at the College Gym in Andover and the Wellbeing Hub at Sparsholt Campus, with students, staff and groups supporting participants and helping to keep the bikes moving throughout the day.
Liz Wilson, Director of Inclusion and Student Experience said:
“Miles of Memories provided a meaningful opportunity for our college community to come together, remember those we have lost and support an important local charity. Bereavement affects many of our learners, and the event highlighted the importance of ensuring that young people have access to the support they need. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part, donated and shared their memories.”
Every mile cycled, every star added and every donation made helped raise funds for Simon Says, enabling the charity to continue providing vital bereavement support to children, young people and families across the local community.
The college would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and contributed to making it such a thoughtful and memorable day, it was an absolute delight to raise a fantastic £345.05 and counting across both campuses.
