The Alresford Show hosted some of our Level 2 Agriculture students on Saturday 5 September which proved to be a very successful weekend! Our students had an early start entering four of our college sheep into Alresford’s sheep category.
We are thrilled to share that they won 1st place in both classes!
The lambs were judged in the pen based on their commercial production and our Level 2 Agriculture students had the exciting task of helping to select the sheep as part of their first practical of the year. The sheep were chosen by looking for the closest identical traits to find the best pair, which included weighing the sheep.
Our sheep were entered into Class 62: A pair of Butchers lambs and Class 63: A pair of ewe lambs any breed, born in 2026 bred by exhibitor.
For Class 62, the lambs were judged on their suitability for meat production. This included looking for well-muscled, well-finished lambs who would provide high-quality meat cuts. The stipulation of Class 63 was that the lambs must have been bred by the person who entered the sheep. The lambs’ breeding potential alongside the exhibitor’s skill as a breeder was also evaluated for this class.
The competition was judged by a Sparsholt alum from 2011, Alex Olphert, who now has a career as a successful sheep farmer in Hampshire. It is always great to see our alum thriving in their respective fields.
