Sports students from Sparsholt College recently held their 10th annual tag rugby tournament for 19 local primary schools, raising awareness for rugby as a sport and engaging with the local community.
Organised and ran solely by Sparsholt’s students, schools from across Winchester and Eastleigh competed in the tournament held at Winchester Rugby Club. Joanne Todd, Lecturer in Sport at the College said: “The tournament was a sunny and enjoyable day for all. The 9-11 year old students who took part showed great enthusiasm, energy and sportsmanship. Parents and teachers were there cheering on their school’s teams and our student organisers were provided some really valuable experience to transfer into future careers in the sporting industry.”
As well as practising organisational, marketing and event skills, Pierre Clarke from the Rugby Football Union delivered refereeing sessions to the Sparsholt students for the tournament, enabling them to learn a new skill set as part of their sports studies. St Peters School won the tag rugby event and will now go on to represent North Eastleigh and Winchester at the Level 3 Tournament in Southampton on 2 May 2018.
