In May, Sparsholt College Group proudly planted the first of 16,000 sapling vines, in order to cultivate a brand new vineyard. The day marked a momentous occasion as the first sapling, small, stick-like, unassuming, and still clad in its protective coating, was put into the ground. Over the course of the two days that followed, the rest of the saplings were planted across the field.
Sparsholt College is also proud to announce the launch of its brand-new Viticulture Curriculum, following the first phase of planting 16,000 grapevines this week on its campus grounds with phase two plans proposed for next year and a further 14,000 grapevines. This exciting initiative comes in response to the rapid growth and international recognition of the UK wine industry, now one of the most dynamic sectors in British agriculture.
The new apprenticeship programme and Viticulture short courses will offer students hands-on experience in grape cultivation, vineyard management, and sustainable winemaking practices, preparing them for careers in one of the country’s fastest-growing fields. The curriculum will combine classroom instruction with real-world training in Sparsholt College’s new on-site vineyard and Laboratories.
Julie Milburn, Principal and CEO of Sparsholt College Group, commented. “This is an exciting milestone for both our college and our region. As the UK wine industry continues to flourish, we’re committed to equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge to thrive in this evolving landscape.”
The college’s investment in viticulture reflects both local and national trends. The college has worked closely with local vineyards and winemakers to develop this curriculum offer and support the industry as it continues to grow.
