CRAIG

Fishery Studies & Aquatics

I’ve always been interested in fish and wanted to further my knowledge. I did my research and Sparsholt offered exactly what I wanted to do.

I completed the Level 2 course and then moved on to Level 3 – I enjoyed every bit of it! The social life was really good, meeting people with the same interests. The course really benefited my communication as well as technical skills, and made me much more confident for work and in general. The on and off-site netting practicals in particular really brought out the best in people as we needed to communicate well and work as a team. I also learnt useful skills such as knowing how to identify fish and using their scientific names.

The course really benefited my communication as well as technical skills, and made me much more confident for work and in general.

The work experience placement is a good opportunity to use and develop industry contacts. In my second year I spent three weeks in Brunei working on the building of their first public aquarium, and I am planning to visit again when it is finished.

I am now the Assistant Manager of an aquatics shop. This involves testing and maintaining our tanks, as well as keeping the website up to date and advising customers. The technical and communication skills I developed at Sparsholt really help in the workplace and my knowledge of native species is very useful!
