Arboriculture, Forestry and Woodland Management

I have developed greatly as a climber and gained a lot of confidence and trust in my skills.

Before deciding on Sparsholt I had a look at other colleges too which mostly had a very school/office like environment. But Sparsholt immediately made me feel relaxed with the outdoor environment and the teachers’ approach towards students, treating you like adults. I love the outdoors, so the land-based courses appealed to me straight away. Studying Arboriculture is leading me to my dream job so I look forward to going to college every day. 

I love the off-site practical days, enjoying the outdoors, it doesn’t feel like work when you are in a buzzing environment surrounded by people who chose to be on the course and encourage each other. The tutors are very approachable, always happy to answer any questions you have and always have your best interests in mind.  

I have gained a wealth of knowledge and practical skills that I can put to good use in the industry and will help me excel in my climbing career. The industry links are good and I am putting my skills into practice on my work placement which the placement team made sure is with a reputable company, with all the correct insurances and safety measures and equipment. The more trust your company gains in you the more you are allowed to do so I have used a wide range of machinery from chippers to stump grinders, strimmers, brush cutters, pole saws, blowers and all sizes of chainsaw from top handles to the newest and most powerful – the list goes on! I am excited to go to work as every day there is something different. I have developed greatly as a climber and gained a lot of confidence and trust in my skills.  

I have been offered a permanent job at my placement company which I’d like to do for 3-5 years, or as long as it takes for me to get sufficient experience to start my own business. Initially I will need to work up the ranks and aim to become lead climber as this will give me experience in working with most of not all types of trees as well as leading a team and quoting for jobs, which will be a good foundation to build up a reputation and business model.

Sparsholt has provided the knowledge and experience I need to do this, as well as people skills, a high work standard and professionalism. I will miss all the friends I have made as well as the fun of the practicals and all the knowledge you can gain from the tutors.
