BSc (Hons) Animal Management graduate and Research Virologist in livestock

I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Sparsholt College. During my five years at Sparsholt, I studied for my National Diploma and then went on to study for my BSc (Hons) in Animal Management.

From the first time I visited the College I was extremely impressed with their specialist facilities, particularly the Animal Management Centre, which holds a variety of exotic species from red pandas to bearded dragons, as well as companion animals. The College is also a working farm which provided me with the opportunity to handle farm animals and take part in their lambing days.

The great thing about the Animal Management course is it’s so varied which was ideal for me as I wasn’t sure exactly which area of animal industry I wanted to work in. The small class size meant you could really get to know your lecturers and peers, and them you. This made in-class discussions and asking for support so much easier. All my lecturers were knowledgeable in their respective fields and always more than happy to help with any questions or queries I had.

What I particularly liked about the course was the work placement each year. During my work placements I got the opportunity to work at an animal health laboratory. This work experience then turned into summer jobs and the experience I gained from this was invaluable. It was this experience, combined with my practical experience of handling large farm animals that got me my current job.

Currently I am working as a Research Virologist, specifically focusing on the transmission and detection of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in livestock.  My job has enabled me to travel around the world and visit some amazing places. I am now considering expanding my horizons and undertaking a PhD within the animal health sector.

I would thoroughly recommend Sparsholt to anyone wanting to work within the animal industry.
