“I chose an Apprenticeship as I wanted to get experience. With an Apprenticeship you can get this while working and getting paid. I’ve enjoyed learning new massage techniques in particular and meeting new clients every day. It makes you feel good knowing that people enjoy your treatments.

“Being in a salon means you get to try different products and brands such as Decléor, and there is lots of training on offer. It’s a great opportunity.”

Classical Beauty, Salisbury

Alice Kelly is the Salon Owner at Classical Beauty, a contemporary beauty salon situated in the heart of the historical city of Salisbury. She employed Jess Savage as a Level 3 Beauty Therapy Apprentice in 2014.

“I qualified from Andover College in 2012 with an NVQ Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. I loved studying there – the in-house salon, ‘Elements’, was fantastic and I’d recommend it to anyone. I first came to Classical Beauty when I did some work experience in the salon. I was offered a part-time placement and then, when I qualified, a full-time role. In 2014 when the current owner was looking to sell the business, I bought it! We cover almost everything – from waxing and facials to manicures and pedicures – there’s so much going on.

“I wanted to employ an Apprentice because of my experience and give someone the chances I’d had. I was invited to an event at Andover College, where I met with my previous tutors to discuss the next steps. They had someone in mind and the process was very easy and quick. The College sent CVs to me and we selected two candidates for a trades test. Jess was successful – she fitted in really well.

“Having an Apprentice has been so helpful – as Jess was already Level 2 trained she could do most treatments and it was great having an extra pair of hands over the busy summer. She very soon got her own client base up and running and we are now able to really focus on the next level of her training – using different brands and trying new treatments. It’s great to be able to train specifically for this salon – you’re in control and can work to the needs of the business.

“Working with the College was really easy. I’m really pleased we’ve done it and I’d definitely do it again. It know it can be hard to get a job without experience and it’s great to give someone else that chance.”
