Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Animal Management

I always knew I wanted to work with domestic animals, and had been working in a boarding kennel. I really wanted the scientific knowledge to bring a deeper understanding to the role and progress in the future, so I started researching colleges and courses. I’d heard people talk about Sparsholt in a positive way, so I was familiar with the name before viewing the website. The College website had a lot of useful information on the courses. I chose the subsidiary diploma as I only wanted to study for one year. I discussed the course with a tutor, who was really helpful at exploring the options and helping me choose the best course for my career plans.

We get to do more practical work with the animals than I ever thought we would! I’ve never seen such a range of animals – you get to work with so many species and it gives you ideas for future careers. All the lecturers have been brilliant and we’ve all appreciated being treated like adults and given responsibility straight away.

At the start of the course we brainstormed different career areas and canine hydrotherapy stood out for me. I contacted a local centre and have been doing work experience there since. The dogs walk on an underwater treadmill and we aid them and monitor their progress. Many are recovering from operations and it’s so satisfying to see their mobility improve. I’ve also secured some further training over the summer and have a positive job contact.

Work experience is so important to get into the industry. We’ve had help on job applications and interview techniques, as well as some great contacts. If you want any advice, the tutors are always around.

I’ve learnt more in one year than I ever thought possible. It’s gone so fast and I’ve made lots of friends. I’m always really proud to tell people I’ve studied at Sparsholt.
