The Equine Centre at Sparsholt College Group has successfully hosted the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Equestrian National Championships for the first time, welcoming talented student riders from across the UK for three days of top-level competition.
Held from 9–11 June, the prestigious championships brought together university students who had qualified through a season of mini league and regional competitions. More than 500 students take part in BUCS equestrian competitions each year, all aiming to secure a place at the National Championships and National Trophy Finals.
The event marked a significant milestone for Sparsholt, joining a select group of respected equestrian institutions to have hosted the championships, including Hartpury, Bishop Burton, Moulton and Easton.
BUCS equestrian competition is unique in that riders are required to compete on unfamiliar horses, demonstrating their adaptability, horsemanship and technical ability. Competitors are given a maximum of five minutes to ride and assess their horse before competing in dressage, while showjumping riders may jump a maximum of four practice fences before entering the arena.
The championships provided an excellent opportunity for Sparsholt to showcase its outstanding equine facilities and expertise to students, staff and visitors from across the country. While many competitors had already made their higher education choices, the event also welcomed younger riders and supporters, helping to raise awareness of the opportunities available through equine education and training at Sparsholt College and University Centre.
The event highlighted the strong progression routes from further education into higher education and competitive university sport. Sparsholt’s College students were able to gain valuable insight into the opportunities available beyond college, seeing first-hand how equestrian sport can be combined with higher-level study.
Championship Results
Following three days of competition, riders from universities across the UK competed for national honours in both dressage and showjumping disciplines.
The overall BUCS Equestrian National Championship title was awarded to Laura Patterson from SRUC following a standout performance throughout the championships.
In the Dressage Championship, Ruth Farnsworth representing Cardiff University claimed first place, while the Showjumping Championship was won by Ellie Fredericks also from Cardiff University.
The overall team title was secured by Nottingham Trent University, whose riders delivered consistent performances across both disciplines.
The championships showcased the exceptional standard of university equestrian sport, with riders demonstrating remarkable skill and adaptability while competing on unfamiliar horses.

The successful hosting of the championships further strengthens Sparsholt’s reputation as a leading centre for equine education and training.
