A talented Sparsholt College Animal Management student, Griffin Given (Aged 20), is gaining international recognition in the fast-growing sport of WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross) after recently competing on the world stage against some of the sport’s leading athletes.
Griffin represented themself with determination and skill at the World WCMX online series, placing third in round one of the Pro Men category. Their performance has earned them recognition within the global WCMX community and highlighted the growing impact of adaptive action sports.
WCMX combines the tricks, jumps and creativity of skatepark riding with highly specialised wheelchairs, enabling athletes to perform spectacular manoeuvres and compete at elite levels. Griffin’s participation in an international event marks a significant achievement and reflects the countless hours of training and commitment Griffin has invested in the sport.
Liz Wilson, Director of Inclusion and Student Experience is proud to celebrate Griffin’s success and the positive example they set for fellow students through perseverance, ambition and sporting excellence.
She said: “Griffin’s achievement is an inspiration to everyone within our college community, the dedication to the sport and willingness to challenge themself on an international stage demonstrate what can be achieved through hard work, resilience and determination.”
Griffin commented: “Getting to compete against some of the world’s leading athletes was such an honour. I skateboarded before I was disabled and young me would be so proud of where I am now.”
As Griffin continues to pursue their sporting ambitions, they are currently fundraising for a new specialist wheelchair that will enable them to compete at larger national and international events. The new equipment would provide enhanced performance capabilities and support their continued development as a competitive athlete.
Supporters are encouraged to follow Griffin’s journey via their Instagram Page @spider_skates_ and help raise awareness of fundraising efforts as they work towards future competitions and opportunities within the sport.
