The College and University Centre has established minimum English language requirements for all international students for whom English is a second language.

Students with GCSE, iGCSE or International Baccalaureate in English Language at grade 4/C or above will normally have the required English language skills for entry onto courses at Sparsholt College and University Centre Sparsholt; otherwise, the following general requirements may apply:

Course English Language Requirement
Level 3 Diploma or Access to H.E. IELTS (Academic) 5.5 overall, with a minimum 5.0 in any band or equivalents
FdSc/BSc degree IELTS 6.0 overall, with a minimum 5.5 in any band; Pearson (PTE) 56; Cambridge English Scale Score 169-175 (FCE grade B; CAE level B2).
MSc degree IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall, with a minimum 6.0 in any band; Pearson (PTE) 61; Cambridge English Scale Score 176-185 (FCE grade A; CAE level B2)


English language requirements for student visa applications

If you require a student visa to study in the UK, then you must prove your knowledge of English language when you both apply for a CAS and for your visa. This means showing evidence that you have passed a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider with a score of 5.5 or above in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

You are exempt from this requirement if you are a national of one of the countries listed below or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in:

Antigua and Barbuda


the Bahamas









New Zealand

St Kitts and Nevis

St Lucia

St Vincent and the Grenadines

Trinidad and Tobago
