What will I learn?

This course covers the following

  • Explain the key aspects of medicines legislation, including the Medicines Act and relevant CQC regulations.
  • Describe the guidelines and standards set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and CQC for medicines management.
    Types of medicines and their uses

  • Identify different types of medicines (e.g., prescription, over-the-counter, controlled drugs).
  • Understand the common uses and effects of various medications.
    Medication Policies and Procedures

  • Understand the care provider’s medication policy and procedures.
  • Describe the process for receiving, storing, administering, and disposing of medications.

  • Demonstrate correct procedures for receiving and storing medications securely.
  • Check medication expiry dates and understand protocols for dealing with expired medications.
    Administering Medications

  • Correctly administer oral, topical, and other forms of medication following the prescriber’s instructions.
  • Perform accurate medication administration records (MAR) documentation.
    Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitoring individuals for side effects and adverse reactions.
  • Report any medication errors or incidents promptly and correctly according to organisational policies.

  • Respect and consider individual preferences and needs when managing medications.

  • Engage with individuals to ensure they understand their medications and encourage self-administration where appropriate.

    Evaluation and Documentation Outcomes

  • Document all administered medications, refused doses, and any discrepancies accurately. Escalation as required.

  • Participate in regular medication audits to ensure compliance with CQC standards.
  • Review and update care plans to reflect changes in medication regimes.

  • Understand and implement CQC’s Fundamental Standards relating to medicines management.
  • Ensure practices align with the key lines of enquiry (KLOEs) used by CQC during inspections.

    Follow the correct procedure for reporting medication errors or incidents as per company protocol.
    Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve patient safety.

    Training can be delivered either in our state of the art training ward at Andover College or at the client’s premises. The course content can be amended to take account of the client’s specific training needs.
