Sparsholt College Higher Education students presented their dissertation posters today at the annual research day.

Congratulations to every one who took part with:

1st place – Darren Wolfall , BSc Ecology and Conservation

Rearch: ‘An investigation of Doormouse Activity in Woodland Structure”

Darren’s research looked for a comparison between activity in lower woodland canopy and upper canopy.

Darren said he had wanted to do a degree for years but did not have the confidence. He formerly worked for the Prison Service where a colleague there told him to “just go for it.”

Alongside studying his degree at Sparsholt he is self-employed as a tree surgeon and plans to use his degree to do ecology reports on ancient trees working with organisations such as the Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission.

Highly Commended – Kate Hart, BSc Garden Design

Research: ‘Naturalistic Planting – is it a viable alternative for public landscape planting.’

Kate’s research looked at meadow style planting and whether it could be used in public spaces. She explored the various caveats this would entail such as cost, maintenance, sustainability and biodiversity.

Before coming to Sparsholt Kate worked as a dental hygienist. Five years ago she decided on a complete career change and now works for a garden design practice. She embarked on the BSc Garden Design to further hone her skills and develop her new found garden design career.

Highly Commended – Megan Curtis BSc Equine Studies

Research: ‘Promotion of the Equine Industry by the New Forest and Hampshire County Show.’

Megan looked at the equine industry promotion and equestrian sport participation by investigating agriculture shows as a promotional tool. She specifically looked at the New Forest Show and the Hampshire County Show.

On completion of her degree Megan would like to go into event management, particularly organising events for equine and agriculture shows.
