The management of trees and woodland are critically important for the sustainable development of our countryside, our urban spaces, our leisure pursuits and for conservation. We provide training for the people who will manage and work in our forestry industries for timber production as well as those who look after and manage individual trees in parks, streets and private gardens. Learning from experts in the field our students will acquire all the practical and scientific skills to work in the industry or to study at an advanced level.


  • Forest worker – progressing to supervisor or foreman grade

  • Tree officer for a local authority
  • Commercial tree work
  • Tree nursery, arboretum
  • Tree care companies

  • Sawmill and timber processing area – for developing skills in adding value to products and processing
  • Safe training areas for chainsaw, brush cutters, strimmers and machine operation – essential for machine skills development
  • Workshops for maintenance of chainsaw and other equipment
  • Safe tree climbing practise areas, with a wide variety of trees on site or nearby to enhance climbing skills
  • Local forests to provide management practise and hands-on training to commercial standards
  • Students also have the chance to become involved in projects such as the tallest tree project and the national student climbing competition to widen interest and experience

The college helped ensure the course was right for me and supported me with the transition back into education. I have enjoyed meeting new people and gaining different skills, which are all very useful preparation for employment.
